15 of my newest portraits, part of the Special Collections and Circus Archive at Illinois State, are now on view on the first floor of the Milner Library at ISU!
Last March I had the privilege of photographing backstage at the Barnum and Bailey Circus as they performed in Moline, IL. My friend from Bennington College, Jonathan, had been working as the traveling educator with the circus for quite some time, and I was excited to see him and visit with his students to discuss photography. I showed the group my Moweaqua portfolio, and we talked about what makes “home” a home, photographing things that only they get to see in their travels and how diverse America can be, depending on whose viewpoint it is coming from. Needless to say, I left my copy of the Americans behind for their traveling library .
After visiting the classes, and taking several class pictures, I spent the next two days backstage during shows, talking with performers, vendors, technicians and staff about their work with Barnum and Bailey. Everyone was so welcoming, and willing to participate that I felt extremely inspired and fortunate.
I can’t thank everyone enough- from the subjects to the circus itself, Jonathan to the folks at the Circus archive at ISU- for their gracious support. We had a good time selecting images from the archive to accompany the new portraits- I can’t begin to explain what a treasure trove is on the 6th floor of Milner! Enjoy, and thank you again everyone for making this show possible!

Jesus On a Coatrack (2008) is on display at Illinois State this summer as part of the Permanent Collection Exhibition- surrounded by amazing artwork from an impressive collection! You can find more details about the show at http://www.cfa.ilstu.edu/galleries/
It’s quite an honor to be included in this show and the collection, it was a surprise to see my piece next to two of my favorite artists!

You might think that I’ve forgotten how to blog these past two months, but I assure you I’m just playing catch-up after a really busy final semester and preparing a show of 29 images from Moweaqua. Before I move on from ISU (and bring the show down to Moweaqua), I thought I’d share the set-up from Gallery 2 at ISU. Yes, I even managed to include my favorite Moweaqua ashtray into the gallery….

Please come join us March 30th at University Galleries at Illinois State University for the opening of my MFA show, titled “The One and Only: Photographs from Moweaqua”. A good time will be had by all!
The show will be at ISU until April 3rd. Gallery hours are listed below.
After this the work can be seen at my gallery in Moweaqua, and hopefully at a few arts festivals this summer. I can’t thank everyone in Moweaqua and at ISU enough for their support, participation and love during this process. I hope that I’ve done you all proud!

I can’t congratulate my “ladies” of the Performance and Camera class enough for their successful work and opening this semester at ISU. We had over 100 people visit the gallery in 2 hours, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. I will really miss working with this group of amazing students, but I’ll see you all in the lab next semester!
The show will be up at Transpace for the rest of the month, so please stop by if you couldn’t make the opening!

This year I had to honor of working with First Farmer’s State Bank to produce their 2010 Calendar titled “Rural Route”. I spent a good amount of time exploring Delevan, Minier and Bloomington (the locations of the 3 bank branches) and we came up with an edit of 12 images from that work. This has been a wonderful project to be a part of! The calendar was designed by local graphic designer Dena McDonald, and printed at Alpha Graphics in Bloomington. I just got my copy today and couldn’t be happier with the final results!
Prints from the calendar are available for purchase for $60. The money is being divided equally to benefit the 4-H clubs of Tazwell and McLean County, and to establish a photography award for the Illinois State University Student Annual.
First Farmer’s State Bank has been a huge supporter of Photography at Illinois State. For the past year ISU students’ work has been featured in their lobby. Now you can see a few Britten Traughber prints in the lobby, or order one for your home or as a gift and help raise funds for these local organizations!
Orders can be placed by sending a check to the address below. Please indicate which month you are purchasing, and don’t forget to include where the print should be shipped!
